A few weeks later, Oliver was able to leave. He only had minimal use of his hands, but it was enough that he could still perform the needed daily tasks without assistance. The twitching had stopped, thanks to the neoprene gloves that applied just enough pressure to his hands that they kept his nerves in check. Not to anyone's surprise, Nyxia was waiting for him when he was discharged. She gently looped her arm around his as they walked towards his house. Various townspeople reluctantly engaged in basic conversation with them as they passed. The investigation ruled in favor of foul play, but there wasn’t enough evidence to point toward an attacker. He had been cleared.

As soon as his house was in view, he stopped. He was quickly overcome with a burning sensation in his stomach; the pungent taste of vomit rose in his throat. Nyxia brushed her blue hair from her face, “Do you want me to stay with you?”. “You can’t. Nyx, I have an odd request, but it’s something that I absolutely need you to do. You need to dye your hair. I need you to have normal hair so you can easily blend in. Just for a while.”. Oliver cleared his throat as his gaze met that of a smiling Aria in the front window. He thanked her for her company and headed home.

Aria greeted him with a giant smile, not saying a word, just simply watching him. Oliver looked around at the remaining dried blood and skin remnants on the floor. The caution tape and identification markers remained at the scene. With a silent glance at Aria, he removed the items and threw them in the trash. It didn’t take long for the overwhelming sense of dread to set in as he filled the bucket with soapy water. Thankfully, he had a generous amount of disposable gloves since he worked with many antiques. Slipping the gloves on, he grabbed the sponge and bucket and returned to the living room.

Humming, Aria sat on the desk swinging her legs, watching her father scrub the floor as he desperately tried to get rid of as much blood as he could. He did everything he could to not interact with her. “I’m bored, Daddy. You were gone for quite a while, and I had no one to play with.”, she whined, kicking her legs. Oliver stopped scrubbing as the statement made his blood run cold. Without looking up, he began scrubbing harder at the stubborn stains. She growled and shoved a smaller antique desk clock to the ground, causing the face to shatter.

He shuddered at the sound. Against his better judgment, he crawled over to the broken clock and began to pick up the pieces. The glass had shattered, and the hands had separated from the dial, which was now bent. The wheels were knocked loose on impact and rattled around inside as he rotated the clock to survey the damage. Without realizing what he was doing, he held the clock to his chest and gently started to rock back and forth as if he were cradling it.
